Fifth Sunday of Lent

This Sunday the Church enters into the final fortnight of Lent.  This period is known as Passiontide, and the readings and prayers of Mass focus more closely on the passion and death of Jesus as we prepare for the Easter Triduum.

Traditionally we mark Passiontide by veiling the statues and crucifixes in the church.  This veiling is a sign of sorrow and grief (a bit like closing curtains or veiling mirrors in a wake house).  The veils remind us of the great sacrifice Jesus made to save us from our sins.  The crucifixes will be uncovered on Good Friday and the statues remain veiled until the Easter Vigil.
