Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week when we once more follow Jesus and Mary through the events of his passion, death and resurrection.  Our ceremonies help us feel close to Jesus.   When we wave our blessed palms on Sunday we are like those who welcomed the Lord to Jerusalem.  When we receive Holy Communion on Thursday we are among the apostles at the Last Supper.  When we venerate the cross on Friday we are like Our Lady, St John and the women who stayed with Jesus as he died.  And on Saturday night we celebrate the resurrection as the light of Christ defeats the darkness of death.

This year we can celebrate Holy Week in full for the first time in three years.  May God help us to enter into the mysteries so that the saving love of Jesus can touch our hearts as deeply as possible.

SUNDAY OBLIGATION

As Christians we remember the commandment of God to keep holy the Sabbath day and to celebrate the Eucharist “in memory of me”.  For that reason Catholics are obliged to come to Mass on Sundays and holy days (or their vigils) unless they have a serious reason.  The obligation was temporarily removed during the pandemic but is now restored from Easter Sunday (17th April).

EASTER CHOIR REHEARSAL

There will be a rehearsal in the church at 7pm on Monday for people who want to be part of our special choir for the Easter ceremonies.

TROCAIRE

Trocaire boxes should be brought back to the church on Holy Thursday evening.  Thank you for your support.

GOOD FRIDAY FAST & ABSTINENCE

Good Friday is a Day of Fast and Abstinence for all Catholics in good health aged between 14 and 60.

  • We fast by eating just one normal meal
(and also one or two small snacks if necessary).
  • We abstain by not eating meat at all.

GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION

The special collection on Good Friday is for the Christian communities living in the Holy Land.  Envelopes or donations can be brought to either the 3pm or 7pm services.

DIVINE MERCY

The Sunday after Easter is known as Divine Mercy Sunday.  Many people have a devotion to Divine Mercy and the Church grants special indulgences on that day.  We will have a hour of adoration from 3pm on Sunday 24th followed by Vespers & Benediction at 4pm.
