Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Our Holy Father Pope Francis has declared that this Sunday should be the first annual Day of Prayer for Grandparents and the Elderly.

In his message for this celebration (which Fr Damian will read on Sunday) the Pope speaks about the wisdom and life experience that older people bring to the Church and Society.  This is a blessing and one that younger people should respect and appreciate.  And the Pope also challenges older people to listen to the new things God is asking them to do to help share the Gospel with younger generations.

May God bless all the elderly in our parish this weekend!

Fr Damian

PLENARY INDULGENCE

To mark the Day of Prayer for Grandparents the Church grants a plenary indulgence on Sunday to all those who spend some time visiting or contacting someone who is elderly.

In addition to the visit or contact (by phone or online) the indulgence requires us to follow the usual conditions -
 That we:

  • Reject sin
  • Go to Mass and receive Holy Communion.
  • Go to Confession (within three weeks either side of Sunday)
  • Pray for the Pope’s intentions.

A PRAYER FOR GRANDPARENTS

St Anne and St Joachim, you were especially favoured by God to be the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. You provided your daughter with a loving home, family and faithful teaching, and brought her up to be the worthy Mother of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Your faith laid the foundation of courage and strength that allowed Mary to stand by the Cross as her Son was crucified and to still believe. In communion with Mary and Joseph, intercede to your grandson,
Jesus, for all grandparents, so that they may help their families to grow in faith and to discover the mission that God entrusts to them.  Amen.
