Twenty Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

On Friday evening we celebrated the feast of St Monica.  Monica lived in North Africa in the fourth century.  She was a Christian married to a pagan called Patricius who had a violent temper.  Monica had three children but her husband would not allow them to be baptised.  For decades Monica prayed for the conversion of her family and not only did her husband convert on his deathbed, but her children were baptised, entered religious life, and one son (Augustine) became a great bishop and saint.

St Monica is the patron saint of parents who worry about children who have left the faith or fallen into difficulty.  Her story reminds all of us that God always hears our prayers, and that even if they go unanswered for years, the Lord can still work things out for the best.  May St Monica and St Augustine pray for our families this week!

PRAYER TO ST MONICA FOR FAMILIES

Blessed Monica, mother of St Augustine, we give thanks to our Father in Heaven who looked with mercy upon your tears over your wayward son.  His conversion and heroic sanctification were the fruit of your prayers.

Dear St Monica, we now ask you to pray with us for all those sons and daughters that have wandered away from God, and to add your prayers to those of all mothers who are worried over their children.

Pray also for us that, following your example, we may, in the company of our children, one day enjoy the eternal vision of our Father in Heaven. Amen.
