Year of Mercy events at Clonard Monastery

In this Year of Mercy we are hoping to discover that God Himself wants to be known for His mercy more than anything else. Clonard Monastery have a number of events planned to support this.

Pilgrim events

They have organised a special pilgrim event on the last Friday of each month and invite all parishioners, either individually or in groups, to attend. These pilgrim events will have as their theme an aspect of mercy as described by Pope Francis and include morning and evening Mass and the hearing of confessions. There will also be a Service of Prayer and Reflection on the day’s theme and an opportunity to walk through the special Holy Door.

The time for this service will be 7.15pm - 8.15pm on each of these dates:
Friday 26 February; Friday 29 April; Friday 27 May; Friday 24 June; Friday 29 July; Friday 26 August; Friday 30 September and Friday 28 October.

Events for young people

Our Youth Ministry team are incorporating the Jubilee Year of Mercy into all they do this year. In addition, they have organised two specific events to bring this Jubilee Year to the young people of the diocese.

Saturday 19 March 2016 – Day of Mercy for Young People
This special gathering for young people will begin at 2pm and will take place in Clonard on the eve of Palm Sunday/Holy Week. The day will consist of workshops and talks with a particular focus on God’s Mercy. Young people will have the opportunity to explore the themes for this Holy Year in a spirit of fun, faith and friendship. The day will conclude with the vigil Mass of Palm Sunday in Clonard Church. More details on this day will follow in the coming months. The day is aimed at young people aged 15+.

Saturday 16 April 2016 - Jubilee Pilgrimage Walk
The Pilgrimage Walk is modelled on the Camino de Compostela and it represents the journey each of us make through life. The practice of Pilgrimage has a special place in this Year of Mercy. Undertaking a Pilgrimage is a sign that Mercy is a goal to reach and requires dedication and sacrifice. The plan is that Clonard Youth Ministry will invite youth groups and individual young people to gather at a particular church in West Belfast (starting point to be confirmed) and will journey through the streets of this part of the City, stopping at as many churches as possible along the route. Our hope is that at each Church, there will be a representative from the parishioners to welcome the young people. A short moment of prayer will take place. Each of the young people will carry a Pilgrim book and this will be stamped at each of the Church stations. The pilgrims will make their way to Clonard Church, go through the Holy Door, following the ritual of the Holy Door Pilgrimage and partake in a Penitential Service. The logistics and the operational plan for the day have still to be agreed and worked out. Our hope is that as many young people as possible will take part and Parishes will support this initiative. More details to follow in the coming months.
